ARt on Abbot Kinney, Venice CA.

Hey all, met some friends down at Venice last weekend. It was a Sunday and was ridiculously rammed. We escaped the madness of the boardwalk and took a stroll up one of our favorite areas on the Westside - Abbot Kinney Street. The street is quite hip and trendy, with some great restaurants and shops. We came across an amazing piece of art carved into the stucco on a brick wall.

Across the street from this image we spotted another piece of work outside a Gallery we had never noticed before. It was definitely a good way to draw people into the exhibit.

The Gallery was called C.A.V.E. Exhibition was named haiiro by the artist SIT from the Netherlands. Here's some photos of the works on display.

And a little info about the artist:

Personally after seeing the logo representing the exhibition, I though there was a strong link between the imagery and footage of 9/11. maybe I'm making and obvious or tentative link between the two but that was my first reaction.
I'd love to see the works approached with a wider palette, I have a problem with stark whites and blacks, especially as acrylic paints, I find that even the whitest of whites in nature contains some tint and same to be said with black. I always mix a tone into all my whites and blacks to control them as cool or warm, or simple to place them in terms of depth in my compositions. There is something alien and distracting and dead about colorless whites and blacks.
The compositions and subject are lovely in these paintings and the simplicity is effective. I can definitely see the appeal of this work especially in the domestic home environment.
The gallery space is great, and I enquired about showing work there, not surprisingly they are booked for at least the next year, and I received a polite but expected "We'll contact you if we feel we could work with you, thank you".

I came across a stall on the boardwalk by another artist and thought it was very appropriate. It is almost exactly what I had in mind when we named the album 'WEAPON'.

It is always a treat to visit Venice and it's surrounding area. There is so much spirit and diversity in the place. I have found it to be much like Marmite where you either love it or hate it. Personally, I love to visit but have always felt a little claustrophobic spending too much time there.

Please pop by my store and have a look around. www.store.richardjoliver.com
I have new work up there and more charity pieces for us all to help others in need.
